Sunrise on the Reaping was an excellent book, looking forward to its adaptation!

How did you like La Belle Sauvage? I was thinking of reading it, since I liked His Dark Materials, but I heard mixed things regarding it so I was hesitant.

I thought The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was a much better movie than it was a book so I'm very hopeful about the movie adaptation!

I loved La Belle Sauvage. It's my favorite book in the universe, more even than The Golden Compass. I loved the glimpses into everyday life in Lyra's world that we get from Malcolm; Lyra lives such a strange life that we don't really get to see how normal people live and I adored that. (I hated the second book in the new series, tho.)

Oh, that's funny! I thought the book was overall better, although the movie was a really excellent adaptation, possibly my favorite out of the franchise and I do love comparing the two. IMO the book was too long, but the ambiguity in the movie was a little too much. I'm definitely looking forward to Sunrise's adaptation and how it stands against the book.

Maybe I mixed up the reception to the second book with the first one. Hopefully the third book will be much better!

I felt like the movie did a better job of exposing Snow as an unreliable narrator because the audience could literally see his actions. I don't know how it would play if you haven't read the book, though - I found things really interesting, like how the narration tells us Tigris isn't pretty but they cast a really beautiful actress to play her.

And here is why it's my favorite adaptation, there's quite a lot to discuss about the movie vs the book, and the thing is IMO the movie isn't wrong, it just provides a different interpretation of Snow's character, which I'm quite glad for. Many adaptations tend to miss the point of the story, while this adaptation adds even more delightful discussion.

Tom Blyth is a wonderful actor who really conveyed Snow's internal struggles quite nicely on the screen. I'm not sure if the movie could have worked with a lesser actor.

Oh, "Sunrise on the Reaping" must be great if you are already re-reading it! I'm excited to get to it, especially since Haymitch is one of my favourite characters in the series.
The books on your to-read list both sound intriguing.

Would you mind getting more into your caveats on "Misery"? I highly enjoyed both the movie and book so I am just interested. If you don't feel like elaborating, no worries.

I'm a rereader by nature but I don't usually turn around and reread a book this quickly. Sunrise on the Reaping might be the best book in the series - it's a toss-up for me between that and The Hunger Games, the first book. (I won't spoil anything but since Haymitch is a very different person than Katniss, you get a very different perspective on things.)

re: Misery, I think it was very well written (never seen the movie) but it is one of the most misogynist things I've ever read and I would probably warn someone of that before just handing it to them.

Oh, I don't recall it being so misogynistic, but then again, it has been many years and I probably haven't only forgotten a lot of it, but also wasn't as aware of these things as I am today. Might have to re-read.

Definitely, but I think that's half of why I want to read it so badly. Surviving the Hunger Games is probably enough to drive him to that point, but I want the whole story. LOL

I'm incredibly glad you mentioned The Refusal of Work, because I've never heard of it and now I'm so excited to read it. I read the essay In Praise of Idleness by Bertrand Russell in my early 20s and I've been obsessed with it ever since! Thank you for the head's up about another anti-work book!

I looooove anti-work books! You might also be interested in Work Won't Love You Back by Sarah Jaffe and Make Your Own Job: How the Entrepreneurial Work Ethic Exhausted America by Erik Baker. There's a book version of Bullshit Jobs: A Work Rant but I think the original article hits all the high points.

Thank you for the recs, these look great! I tried to read Bullshit Jobs but I found it hard to get through for some reason. I enjoyed the article though, thanks for linking!

Have you read Your Money or Your Life by Vicki Robin? It’s not directly about anti-work but it’s very relevant. I loved it.
