Booknook Friending Meme, Take 2

Hello, hello! [community profile] booknook is (again) tossing its hat in the ring for [community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth in the form of a friending meme :D

This is the same meme as last year, as I do not have the brain-space to make a new one, but who knows! You're answers might have changed! You might not have seen the newest entries! You might have completely forgotten to check it out at all, even though you're the admin and you really should have. So let's do this again! <3

Copy and paste the text from the little box below into a new comment on this post. Feel free to remove the questions that aren't relevant for you! (If you want to fill this out in a post somewhere else, you're welcome do so, simply credit [community profile] booknook :D)

Name: Skye
Pronouns: she/her
Age Group: 30s/Millennial
Dealbreaker(s): A full list of the kind of people I will not get along with is on my journal's pinned post, but in short: don't be an asshole to me or to others, and we'll get along fine.

I Recently Finished Reading: Network Effect, Martha Wells; less recently: Everything is Tuberculosis, John Green
A Book I Want to Reread: I reread a lot, but one of these days I want to settle in and reread The Lord of the Rings. It's been a while, and I want to revisit it.
Some Published Titles From My To Be Read List: I don't keep a TBR list (I have a feeling it would be too overwhelming), but some books I've had a while that I want to read: Gideon the Ninth, Tamsyn Muir; rest of the InCryptid series books that I have (which is several), Seanan McGuire; rest of the Newsflesh trilogy, Mira Grant; Old Man's War, John Scalzi
A Book Not-Yet-Published I'm Excited About: cannot currently think of anything...
Related Book News I've Got My Eye On: Very excited for the Murderbot TV show that's premiering on the 16th of this month!!

My All-Time Favorite Book(s): The Goblin Emperor, Katherine Addison; Network Effect, Martha Wells; The Blue Sword, Robin McKinley
My Favorite Book Genre(s): I mostly read Fantasy and Science Fiction
A Book I Recommend in My Favorite Genre(s): The Murderbot Diaries, Martha Wells; everything Robin McKinley has written
A Book I Don't Recommend in My Favorite Genre(s): I DNF'd Ready Player One (Ernest Cline) and liked but opted not to continue reading the series for The Name of the Wind (Patrick Rothfuss) for the same reason: everything interesting about those books derails about halfway through because The Male Protagonist Is Obsessed With A Girl. While Name gets back on track eventually, Cline's prose was not impressive enough for me to want to finish RPO.
A Genre I'm Interested in Trying Out: Tbh I'm happy where I am, genre-wise, though I am always willing to take recs for nonfiction books about science history.

Link to My Latest Book Review: n/a
Link to My Reading Log: I'm skyewriter30 on Storygraph, but I am not great about keeping it updated...

Books/Genres I'm Interested in Discussing/Chatting About: Willing to chat about anything book-related, to be honest!! Would love to connect with other Robin McKinley fans, too!

Name: soricel
Pronouns: he/him
Age Group: 40s
Dealbreaker(s): For books? Probably super stereotypical portrayals of gender roles/dynamics. Gratuitous violence. Edgelordiness. Stylistic choices that make a book inaccessible/impenetrable. Overwhelming lore/worldbuilding. Wow, there are more than I thought! For journals...right-wing rhetoric in either its explicit or more dog whistley forms. Generally I like reading the thoughts of chill, down-to-earth people who are enthusiastic and introspective about their interests and lives. Not saying journaling about other kinds of stuff, or with other kinds of energy, is necessarily a deal-breaker though.

I Recently Finished Reading: Bellies, by Nicola Dinan
A Book I Want to Reread: Ahh, I wish I was more of a re-reader, but I'm not. I'd like to re-read The Time Traveler's Wife sometime, but I'm afraid it won't conjure up the same feelings as it did the first time, or that I'll find it problematic in ways I was willing/able to overlook before...
Some Published Titles From My To Be Read List: Manhunt by Gretchen Felker-Martin. Also some kinda guilty pleasure "steamy" fantasy books I feel a little reluctant to mention here.......
A Book Not-Yet-Published I'm Excited About: I don't know! I don't really pay attention.
Related Book News I've Got My Eye On: (adaptations etc.) Same

My All-Time Favorite Book(s): Tough to say...the first books I remember *really* making an impression on me were Fahrenheit 451 and the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, but I haven't revisited them in years. Moby Dick is up there. Also this might sound pretentious but really it's not--Roland Barthes' more autobiographical stuff. Love those books.
My Favorite Book Genre(s): Probably realistic contemporary fiction, big honkin 19th century novels, and more recently, select SFF stuff and the occasional fluffy romance.
A Book I Recommend in My Favorite Genre(s): For realistic contemporary fiction...probably Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan novels. For big honkin 19th century novels, probably Les Miserables. For SFF, Becky Chambers' Wayfarer series.
A Book I Don't Recommend in My Favorite Genre(s): Probably Moby Dick.
A Genre I'm Interested in Trying Out: I think I'd like to try reading more fluffy romance and fluffy mystery.

Link to My Latest Book Review: Probably nothing too recent, and f-locked anyway, but I'd like to write more book reviews!
Link to My Reading Log: NA

Books/Genres I'm Interested in Discussing/Chatting About: Any of the stuff I mentioned above, plus thoughtful current events-y non-fiction.

Name: Nicole
Pronouns: she/her
Age Group: 40s
Dealbreaker(s): For books? Or People? For books - gratuitous violence or really blatant misogyny or racism (even if it seems somehow "integral" to the plot). However, I do still give most things a try. For people - not keen on interacting with TERFs, racists/bigots, homophobes, transphobes, etc.

I Recently Finished Reading: a short story by Mike Gayle, called The One That Got Away. It wasn't for me. For books, The Chronology of Water by Lidia Yuknavitch.
A Book I Want to Reread: I'm not much of a re-reader, although I'm sure I have some books I read long ago (in high school or college for example) that maybe I'd like to read again to see if I have a different perspective on it.
Some Published Titles From My To Be Read List: My TBR pile is enormous (thanks to keeping it digitally, which is a blessing and a curse). I do weed it out from time to time, as I tend to select randomly from it, using either the "random" sort on Goodreads or my profile page on StoryGraph (which randomly selects several from your list to show to you and will randomize again on refresh). So StoryGraph shows me:
  • The King of Taksim Square by Emrah Serbes
  • Cher, the Memoir: Part One by Cher
  • Bear Season by Gemma Fairclough
  • What We Forgot to Bury by Marin Montgomery
  • Blondes Prefer Gentlemen by Sheila J. Daly [this looks like an old advice book which would be fodder for my podcast, heh]

A Book Not-Yet-Published I'm Excited About: Hmm, not sure, I don't generally keep up with this.
Related Book News I've Got My Eye On: (adaptations etc.) See above. Bad librarian, I guess (but I don't work with the public, so I'm in the clear)!

My All-Time Favorite Book(s): Anne of Green Gables
My Favorite Book Genre(s): I like quite a few genres. I enjoy memoirs/autobiographies/biographies, creative non-fiction, and true crime the best, probably.
A Book I Recommend in My Favorite Genre(s): Hmm, this is a tough one.
A Book I Don't Recommend in My Favorite Genre(s): The Philip Roth biography, maybe; recently slogged through all of that, and I don't recommend it for most folks.
A Genre I'm Interested in Trying Out: I try most things at least once!

Link to My Latest Book Review: I'm on Storygraph and Goodreads, but I'm leaning more towards StoryGraph these days. I also post my thoughts on books and other media publicly on my Dreamwidth (everything else is friends-locked).
Link to My Reading Log: The link above goes to my StoryGraph profile.

Books/Genres I'm Interested in Discussing/Chatting About: I just enjoy chatting with bookish people generally!

    Name: Lex
    Pronouns: she/they
    Age Group: 30s
    Dealbreaker(s): The standard stuff--no sexism/racism/homophobia/etc.

I Recently Finished Reading: But Not Too Bold by Hache Pueyo
A Book I Want to Reread: When Among Crows by Veronica Roth, in anticipation of the upcoming sequel
Some Published Titles From My To Be Read List: The Gentleman and His Vowsmith by Rebecca Ide is next up once I finish A Drop of Corruption by Robert Jackson Bennett
A Book Not-Yet-Published I'm Excited About: To Clutch a Razor by Veronica Roth (!!!!!!); Cinder House by Freya Marske; The Strength of the Few by James Islington; We Love You, Bunny by Mona Awad
Related Book News I've Got My Eye On: I can't think of any off the top of my head, except we've FINALLY got trailers and a release date for The Old Guard 2 movie which is based on a graphic novel and I'm sooo stoked about that.

My All-Time Favorite Book(s): Discworld series, Captive Prince series, The Last Binding series, Grishaverse series but especially the Six of Crows duology, Howl's Moving Castle, Good Omens, The Will Darling Adventures
My Favorite Book Genre(s): Fantasy/Sci-Fi/Romance/Historical/LGBT in any combination. Also not a genre but I love graphic novels!
A Book I Recommend in My Favorite Genre(s): A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske, book 1 of the Last Binding Series which is a historical-fantasy-romance set in Edwardian England which opens with a magical murder mystery
A Genre I'm Interested in Trying Out: I've been trying to dip my toe more into horror but it's been very lowkey fantasy-ish horror so far (But Not Too Bold, Don't Let the Forest In, Someone You Can Build a Nest In, etc.)

Link to My Latest Book Review: I post reviews on my Goodreads as I finish things, but I usually do a reading round up combining one or two months in my journal. I just finished March-April's post here!

Books/Genres I'm Interested in Discussing/Chatting About: Any of my favorite genres above, but I enjoy reading reviews for other genres too and seeing people's book recs!
