Mostly looking for interesting stuff to pull out of the library.
Deal breaker(s): In literature, Female character only exists for male character development. Romance as the sole plot impetus. Proselytizing. Sexual coersion. Body horror and gore. Cannibalism. Isekai. In people, pruning characters and conflicts down to the point where they can fit into boiler plate AU. Modern weeaboo orientalism. I would prefer to be assured that we both read the same book by actually engaging with the nitty gritty.
I Recently Finished Reading:The Burning Kingdoms series by Tasha Suri. The Red Palace by June Hur. A Long Road to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. A Book I Want to Reread:Madou soshi (MDZS/The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, JP translation) 魔道祖師 by Mo xiang tong xiu 墨香銅臭 , trans. Cheng Ying-hsin 鄭穎馨; Amatsuki あまつき by Takayama Shinobu 高山しのぶ. Some Published Titles From My To Be Read List:
All Systems Red by Martha Wells
Heavenly Tyrant by Xiran Jay Zhao
Jade City by Fonda Lee
The Tale of Genji trans. Dennis Washburn
something from Terry Pratchet's Discworld series. Don't know where to start.
A Book Not-Yet-Published I'm Excited About: idk yet. Related Book News I've Got My Eye On: (adaptations etc.) mostly manga->anime stuff.
My All-Time Favorite Book(s):I don't know if I have a favorite novel. My favorite manga is Cardcaptor Sakura original run. My Favorite Book Genre(s): Science fiction, "Schmuck with sword" type Low Fantasy. Action/Adventure. Space Opera. I'm too old for YA but "New Adult" isn't well SEO-optimized. Always on the look out for action/adventure schlock. Would love to find more space cowboys too. A Book I Recommend in My Favorite Genre(s):House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski A Book I Don't Recommend in My Favorite Genre(s):Babel: Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution by R. F. Kuang A Genre I'm Interested in Trying Out: Alternative History
Genres I'm Interested in Discussing/Chatting About: Translation, especially JP>EN. I've been trying to read all the Chinese classics so you don't have to, so I can get deeper in the xianxia rabbit hole. I'm open to a lot.
