In 2024:

I Read: I was very bad at counting this past year, but it's gotta be about a dozen of things I read willingly + another dozen read for work/study reasons, which I tend not to consider towards my "reading goal."
My Reading Goal: 2024 was the year I switched between three different logging methods, from digital to analog and across various bookwyrm instances, so I didn't have a goal per se. I was very much below my average of past years however, so not too satisfied with that ):
I Challenged Myself: I tried to read more novels written (not translated) in my native language
A New Genre I Attempted: Not exactly "new," but I started reading graphic novels/memoirs again
An Author New-to-me in 2024 I Really Enjoyed: Luciano Bianciardi! Both incredibly funny and soul-crushing.
My Favorite Book of the Year: I always have trouble picking out favourite books, but it has to be either The Left Hand of Darkness or Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow.
Books I Read in 2024 That I Recommend: As above, plus most of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles (the first three, for sure) and It's a Hard Life by Bianciardi.

In 2025:

My Reading Goal: I'm aiming for a book a week, which will be more or less feasible depending on how much I'll have to work this year.
I'm Going to Challenge Myself: I don't really do structured challenges, except that I'm always sort of trying to tick off books from the Gilmore Girls reading list, but let's say that that's more of a multi-year type of project.
My TBR List: I have a partial log of what I want to read on what has now turned into a 800+ line Excel spreadsheet...
Books I'm Especially Interested in Reading in 2025: Definitely more Le Guin, which is the most embarrassing gap I have in my knowledge of SFF. I also slept on The Book of Love by Kelly Link, which I shouldn't have.
A Book Coming Out in 2025 That I'm Excited About: Alecto the Ninth, should it get a 2025 release date. Besides that, I'm not reading many sagas, and I usually don't keep up to date with specific authors as to know with a ton of advance when they're coming out with a new book. I'm also just very slow at catching up with what I set my eyes on. Maybe the new Torrey Peters, but I won't rush to the shop to get it.
Other Book-Related News for 2025 I'm Interested In: The Raven Cycle graphic novel adaptation is coming out this year, which doesn't really register as a new release for me, but it's something I might even pre-order, even if only out of nostalgia and not genuine enthusiasm. Like, I'm sure it'll be great, they picked a beloved fanartist for it (best case scenario), and I'm sure I'll have an amazing time reading it, but I'm definitely not waiting for it with the same energy as I did with any Stiefvater-related property five years ago.

I really need to read some fiction by Le Guin this year, I've only read non-fiction by her so far. I've been to a talk by her and a local project is being named for her. This is a stupidly big gap for me.

Seconded, my girlfriend looked at me like I was crazy when I told her, then lent me The Dipossessed, which I'll tackle soon, I think. I really enjoyed LHoD and it's not a long book by any means, so I'd recommend it as a starting point.

Ooooh, I read 'The Left Hand of Darkness' last year - it wasn't my favourite by her, but still glad to have read it. I have Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow on the TBR pile so I'm looking forward to that.

Wishing you a great year of reading adventures.

From what I've been told about The Dispossessed I think I'll like that one more, but LHoD was still a solid read for me. I loved the protagonists of Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, that was the main appeal for me (I've read that other readers who were mainly into it for the plot about game dev were somewhat disappointed).

Wishing you a good year as well!

Honestly I have a similar gap with Le Guin, so you're not the only one. I already have some books by her, I just need to actually start reading them.

Ooh, I did not hear about The Raven Cycle graphic novel adaptation. And the art looks so pretty!

Yes, I've only seen it mentioned a couple of times on Stief's blog, but I'm also not very into what's left of the online TRC fandom so I don't know how much it's actually getting talked about online/elsewhere. Really looking forward to that but it's coming out in the summer!

I Read: how many books in 2024? 40
My Reading Goal: My goal was to take a large bite out of my TBR list, all those books I'd picked up here and there that were languishing on my Kindle. I did pretty good. I had a big problem in previous years when I kept hitting hard DNFs and that was making be really, really not want to try more new books
I Challenged Myself: I didn't do any reading challenges
A New Genre I Attempted: Nope, I think I'd read at least some of every genre before 2024
An Author New-to-me in 2024 I Really Enjoyed: TJ Klune
My Favorite Book of the Year: The Bell in the Fog by Lev AC Rosen
Books I Read in 2024 That I Recommend: The Bell in the Fog, Wolfsong by TJ Klune, Turtles All The Way Down by John Green, Murderbot Diaries

In 2025:

My Reading Goal: To take a bigger bite out of the unread books I own. This will be a bit harder because I'll be dipping into books I've put of for a while. Also, I set up a book bingo in my reading journal. I like the idea of setting a bunch of mini-challenges rather than hitting a numerical goal a lot.

Picture of my board

I'm Going to Challenge Myself: do you plan on doing any reading challenges? So far, just the bingo above, though my first read of the year is checking off 3 boxes by itself. I do also want to try joining a local book club because there are a lot here, but it's hard to find one I vibe with. The one I was going to join, it's January book is one I've read before and yeah, no
My TBR List: I will make one but not yet. There are a few books that have been on my TBR so long that I am actually just going to knock them out before I make a new list. I just feel bleh about putting them on yet again
Books I'm Especially Interested in Reading in 2025: Eh, nothing I am too excited about, but I plan to finish the Green Creek series by TJ Klune
A Book Coming Out in 2025 That I'm Excited About: Nothing I can think of

In 2024:

I Read: I read 16 different books in 2024. (If you count rereads of certain titles, I read 20 books.)
My Reading Goal: I mostly just wanted to read 1 book per month, and while it averages out, I didn't quite do that, as I didn't finish any books during March or November.
An Author New-to-me in 2024 I Really Enjoyed: I read Stephanie Burgis's A Marriage of Undead Convenience, a fantasy romance novella, and really enjoyed it. I've resolved to look into Burgis's other books, but that hasn't happened quite yet.
My Favorite Book of the Year: The Sandman, Volume 5: A Game of You
Books I Read in 2024 That I Recommend: The novella by Stephanie Burgis, mentioned above. Also, having revisited them this year, The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman, and Sabriel by Garth Nix. Both were still just as good as I remembered.

In 2025:

My Reading Goal: I just want to finish a book per month if I can, though I'm trying to be steadier in my reading habits as well.
Books I'm Especially Interested in Reading in 2025: I would love to get my hands on a copy of Heavenly Tyrant by Xiran Jay Zhao this year; it's the sequel to Iron Widow, and I've been eager to read it since I finished the first book.
A Book Coming Out in 2025 That I'm Excited About: John Green's Everything is Tuberculosis, which I believe comes out in March.
Other Book-Related News for 2025 I'm Interested In: I think the Murderbot Diaries TV show is supposed to come out this year? Possibly? Though I'm still not thrilled with the casting for Murderbot/SecUnit, the other casting choices are much better. And it'll be interesting to see how the interiority of the books is adapted for the screen.

I'm hoping to get to a re-read of the Sabriel series, this year so that I can read the ones that weren't around when I first read the series what feels like 100s of years ago now. I have them ready, but then I've had them ready for a couple of years and just haven't got to them.

Wishing you many great reads for 2025.

I'm with you on the Murderbot Diaries TV show. I love Alexander Skarsgård in other works, but the choice was disappointing. Regardless, I'll still look forward to it.

From: [personal profile] skye_writer
Oh yeah. Like... from an outside/Doylist view, I can kind of see why they cast a white guy in the lead; it's quite possible the show might not have been greenlit otherwise. Also with Skarsgård on as a producer as well, it seems likely that this might have been a project of his that he wanted to star in from the start.

But from the perspective of the books, where SecUnit notes repeatedly that the average skin color of a human is "mid-brown", it makes no sense to have a generic, cloned-tissue-created construct be white.

I digress. I'm still looking forward to the show, just to see how they go about adapting it. It'll be interesting, if nothing else.

Other than Skarsgård, I'm pretty curious how they will adapt Murderbot's narration. It's pretty integral to the enjoyment of the story.

I'm also kind of concerned because they're apparently only adapting the first novella for the first season, and well. It's a very short story. I'm not sure how are they going to extend this over multiple episodes.

In 2024:

I Read: about 250 books including audiobooks - a lot of audiobooks and a whole lot of novellas so it's not as many as it maybe looks like!
My Reading Goal: to reduce my TBR pile by at least 50 books - I failed abysmally and actually ended up with more books that I started with because too many of the books I read were 'borrowed' either from the library, a friend or Kindle/Audible Plus
I Challenged Myself: no challenges
A New Genre I Attempted: I can't think of anything that would class as a new genre - unless maybe Romantasy - but I figure that I've probably read books that would now be classed as that even if they weren't at the time I read them.
An Author New-to-me in 2024 I Really Enjoyed: Leigh Bardugo, Seanan McGuire and Travis Baldree - I know that's three but they were all good.
My Favorite Book of the Year: I really enjoyed 'Legends and Lattes' and also the Six of Crows duology,
Books I Read in 2024 That I Recommend:Dragon Class by Melanie Astley was a great read as were 'A Psalm for the Wild Built' and 'A Prayer for the Crown Shy' by Becky Chambers. If you like an lgbtq end of world dystopia then 'All that's Left in the World' by Erik J Brown was also good.

In 2025:

My Reading Goal: Trying to reduce my TBR pile - aspirationally I'd like it to be 50 less by the end of the year but after last year even one less would be an improvement. Also to read some of the books on my TBR pile, I need to go back and revisit the early volumes in series because it is quite literally years since I read them.
I'm Going to Challenge Myself: nothing but the above or maybe to have no books on my Audible 'waiting to listen' collection that are more than 12 months on the list - definitely if I've bought them, less worried if they're borrowed from Audible Plus.
My TBR List: Officially my TBR pile has 518 books, but I know that I have some on Kindle and Audible that aren't listed and it doesn't account for any that I acquire as the year goes on
Books I'm Especially Interested in Reading in 2025: I'm hoping to make a start on Karen Miller's Kingmaker, Kingbreaker series as I have a lot of the series on the shelf unread, in addition, I'd like to re-read the early books and then go onto finish Brandon Sanderson's 'Mistborn' series and S A Chakraborty's Daevabad series.
A Book Coming Out in 2025 That I'm Excited About: not sure about this one at the moment - I have got a Seanan McGuire title on pre-order that's due out in a few days but not sure if it's new or just new to audio.
Other Book-Related News for 2025 I'm Interested In: nothing specific.

Well, I still think 250 books is impressive, not matter if parts of it were novellas and audiobooks! Well done :)

I Read: 30 books + 71 manga
My Reading Goal: I feel pressured by reading goals so I don't use them. I just try to read a lot, and to read at least a few works that aren't in the dead center of my comfort zone.
I Challenged Myself: Same as above, I don't like the pressure.
A New Genre I Attempted: Is personal finance a genre? If so, it's that. Otherwise, it's more contemporary fiction.
An Author New-to-me in 2024 I Really Enjoyed: Wayama Yama! Her sense of humor works really well for me.
My Favorite Book of the Year: Ugh, just one? The Story of Silence by Alex Myers.
Books I Read in 2024 That I Recommend: Big list over at my journal.

In 2025:

My Reading Goal: No goals. Just read less self-help, I suppose. Also, I would like to read more fanfic 🙊
My TBR List: I'm planning to read the “syllabus” in If You Can by William Bernstein (PDF, 186KB). I also have a few professional development books that I haven't finished from last year.
Books I'm Especially Interested in Reading in 2025: Maybe this is the year I’ll finish A Random Walk Through Wall Street!

I Read: 136 books, of which 98 are new to me.
My Reading Goal: I set my reading goal at 50 books, so I overshot it.
I Challenged Myself: I did the Read Disabled 2024 challenge on Storygraph, and I enjoyed it. I'm disabled myself, so I'm always looking for something relevant to read. This challenge pushed me to broaden my horizons to other disabilities, which is great.
A New Genre I Attempted: I'm fairly certain I've already read all the genres I read in 2024...
An Author New-to-me in 2024 I Really Enjoyed: I recently read Patricia McKillip's The Forgotten Beasts of the Eld and I just completely fell in love with her writing.
My Favorite Book of the Year: I just did a write-up on my favorite reads of the year!
Books I Read in 2024 That I Recommend: Honestly, see above for my recommendations :)

In 2025:

My Reading Goal: I set my reading goal to 50 again. I want to keep it nice and feasible.
I'm Going to Challenge Myself: I'm going to find another disability-focused challenge on Storygraph. Other than that, I want to try reading more nonfiction this year. Last year I mostly read fiction in my free time, because I was doing a lot of heavy and dry reading at work but I don't do that anymore.
My TBR List: I want to finish up some series I've been reading in 2024, and catch up on some new-to-me authors' backlogs. I also plan to get back to the Vorkosigan series.
Books I'm Especially Interested in Reading in 2025: Patricia McKillip's books!
A Book Coming Out in 2025 That I'm Excited About: I'm really looking forward to Emily Wilde's Compendium of Lost Tales by Heather Fawcett.

I Read: 135 books (this includes graphic novels/manga too)
My Reading Goal: I think my goal was 90 books so I did well.
I Challenged Myself: I do several challenges, the Popsugar challenge, the alphabet challenge (FB), the cloak and dagger group (also on FB, mystery/true crime reading), the literary escapes challenge (also on FB, read a book in all 50 states plus as many countries as you can), the Mount TBR one on Goodreads. I did well (I don’t go nuts trying to read all 50 states, just do what I can)
A New Genre I Attempted: no not really, I mean they’re marketing cozy fantasy hard as something new but it really isn’t. (In many ways Piers Anthony’s Xanth series would be classified as such) So I read some, loved it but then again I have since the 80s
An Author New-to-me in 2024 I Really Enjoyed: Of Hoaxes and Homicide by Anastasia Hastings (mystery) Your Blood My bones by Kelly Andrew (YA horror), Lackadaisy volume 1 by Tracy J. Butler (graphic novel)

My Favorite Book of the Year: Bloodmarked by Tracy Deonn

Books I Read in 2024 That I Recommend: All of the above plus These Haunted Hills by Jana Denardo (full disclosure, this is mine), Of Hoaxes and Homicide by Anastasia Hastings, The Graveyard Shift (24/7 Demon Mart, #1) by D.M. Guay, Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree A Rival Most Vial: Potioneering for Love and Profit by R.K. Ashwick

In 2025:

My Reading Goal: the goal is 100 books and that should be doable
I'm Going to Challenge Myself: Same ones as last year plus a couple book bingos I found on dreamwidth
My TBR List: I own literally hundreds of books (most of them heaped up from library sales not to mention what publishers send me via netgalley) My goal is to get as many out of my house as possible. Netgalley gets read first as there is that review expectation there (and I would want someone with MY arcs to do the review so how could I not?) I use the challenges to keep me motivated. It’s a little scary with say the popsugar challenge which is 50 books that I can go to my book shelves and pull off 80% of this challenge without trying.
Books I'm Especially Interested in Reading in 2025: Looking forward to another volume of Lackadaisy and continuing my favorite mystery series but I don’t really have anything in mind in particular.
A Book Coming Out in 2025 That I'm Excited About: Tracy Deon’s next book in her series
Other Book-Related News for 2025 I'm Interested In: Not so much news but I’m looking forward to the Ohioana book festival in Columbus where I meet author friends and buy too much.

I Read: 35 books
My Reading Goal: my goal was 35
I Challenged Myself: I didn't do any challenges, and did not feel like I challenged myself much, just read what I wanted to read.
A New Genre I Attempted: cozy fantasy. I am not a huge fan of fantasy (or a fan at all in general), but I have found that cozy fantasy is very light on the actual fantasy sometimes, so that helps.
An Author New-to-me in 2024 I Really Enjoyed: Kate Quinn - I read Signal Moon and it was really good. Its a novella/short story, set during WWII, about a young woman who intercepts messages and sends them to Bletchley Park. But one day she gets a message from a soldier requesting help... from 2023! So its a bit timey whimey.
My Favorite Book of the Year: I'm not sure I had a book that was outstanding enough to be a favourite, I read a lot that I enjoyed, but I guess I really liked The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst and also The Anomoly by Michael Rutger
Books I Read in 2024 That I Recommend:

Here's 10:

Signal Moon by Kate Quinn
The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst
The Anomoly by Michael Rutger
Drowning by T.J. Newman
Black Sheep by Rachael Harrison
Metronome by Tom Watson
Clear by Carys Davis
The Stardust Grail by Yume Kitasei
The Tenfold Tenants by E.V. Belknap
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna

In 2025:

My Reading Goal: I've set my goal low this year, just 20-ish, because I want to challenge myself to read longer books and I feel like a lower number gives me more space to do that.
I'm Going to Challenge Myself: To read longer books. also, I am doing a couple of challenges I found over on The StoryGraph:

Intro to Comics and Graphic Novels 2025
2025 Cozy Reading Challenge
Horror Subgenre Challenge 2025

But I probably won't complete them all, I'm mostly just using them to help me pick my next read.

My TBR List: I have a small list (under 40 books) on goodreads of things I want to read but I have no plans. I'm very much a mood reader, whatever I am in the mood to read at that moment is what I will read, even if its not on my tbr.
Books I'm Especially Interested in Reading in 2025:
See below
A Book Coming Out in 2025 That I'm Excited About:
Cold Eternity by S.A. Barnes
Adrift in Currents Clean and Clear by Seanan McGuire (wayward children #10) - this is tentative, because I didn't like the last few books in the series as much, but I do usually enjoy the ones based on a single character more, so heres hoping its good.

Other Book-Related News for 2025 I'm Interested In:

some movie adaptions that may come out 2025 that I'm interested in:
The Running Man by Stephen King
The Electric State by Simon Stålenhag - on netflix in March

I Challenged Myself: Goodreads challenge + a few reading challenges in groups on there.
A New Genre I Attempted: No, I didn't. I want to expand my horizons though in 2025.
An Author New-to-me in 2024 I Really Enjoyed: I read a lot of the same authors. I *need* to branch out.
My Favorite Book of the Year: Last Writes by Laura Levine (re-read, it gives me the best ROTF laughs every time)
Books I Read in 2024 That I Recommend:
*"The Instinct" series by James Patterson and Howard Roughan (features a queer protagonist trying to save the world. They even made a TV show out of it that I believe ran for 2 seasons. I want to see it even though it was short-lived)
*The Menendez Murders by Robert Rand (if you're at all curious about the Menendez saga, for lack of a better term, this is *the* book to read about Lyle and Erik. The author followed the case from the very beginning)
*"The Jaine Austen Mystery" series by Laura Levine (funny, funny, funny. If you need a pick-me-up these are the books for you)
*Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen (one of Austen's most underrated gems but worth a read. Clever and charming)

In 2025:

My Reading Goal: 110 books, read more diversly and read longer/more thought-provoking books
I'm Going to Challenge Myself: There's a group on here that's devoted to reading books by women of color. It's pretty dormant but I am going to take the challenge anyway.
My TBR List: It's longggg. And I am still trying to figure out how to tackle it!
Books I'm Especially Interested in Reading in 2025: (They're all older but I finally want to get to them this year)
*Moon Called by Patricia Briggs
*The Outsider by Stephen King
*Psycho by Robert Bloch
*Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree
*Boy's Life by Robert McCammon
*Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
And the list goes on...
A Book Coming Out in 2025 That I'm Excited About:
I have to look at a list. I am still buried in 2024 reads haha
Other Book-Related News for 2025 I'm Interested In: I am last to know what's happening, as always.

In 2024:

I Read: 53 books in 2024
My Reading Goal: I had a bunch of different goals, or I guess challenges? But strictly numerically, my goal was 48 books
I Challenged Myself: I managed (barely!) to read four books in French. I read a very good chunk in Swedish. I read at least one non-fiction book a month. I read ten books off my TBR (success!) and ten books I've owned for at least a year (fail, since the goal was twelve). A little over half of my books were from women/enby authors, and over 10% were from Black authors. I read something from two new countries to me (massive success, percentage wise, since my goal was just one new country).
A New Genre I Attempted: I read so widely that at this point I don't know if there are genres that I've never attempted. If there are any left untested it's because I have very good reason to believe I wouldn't enjoy myself.
An Author New-to-me in 2024 I Really Enjoyed: Marie NDiaye!! So good. So, so good. But I have mixed feelings about recommending her here because I think the English translation is unusually bad, maybe bad enough to turn people off to her.
My Favorite Book of the Year: Vengeance is Mine by Marie NDiaye for novels, and maybe The Dawn of Everything by David Graeber and David Wengrow for non-fiction.
Books I Read in 2024 That I Recommend: Besides those two? I re-read Slaughter-house 5 after my partner read it for the first time and it still hits hard.

In 2025:

My Reading Goal: 48 books, the same I've had for several years now. It works for me.
I'm Going to Challenge Myself: The same challenges I set for myself every year: language challenges (Swedish and French), personal challenges (clearing out my TBR and physical bookshelves), author challenges (gender, race, nationality).
My TBR List: I don't have a TBR list for the year. It just continues to grow and I continue to try to take bites out of it.
Books I'm Especially Interested in Reading in 2025: I don't really have any set reading plans for 2025 so I'm happy to see what life brings me!
A Book Coming Out in 2025 That I'm Excited About: Reading other answers it seems like Alecto the Ninth might come out this year? That would be great. Maybe I'll reread the other books to refresh my memory.
Other Book-Related News for 2025 I'm Interested In: Other answers here have informed me that there is a Murderbot TV series in the works? Potentially interesting!

It's a shame when something gets lost in the translation of books. I've read a few in English where the reviews are so high and people talk about the language and how great it is and the book just falls flat in English.

Congrats on reading in multiple languages! That's a great skill!

I Read: 100 Books
My Reading Goal: My goal was 100 - it's been harder to hit the past couple of years but I like it as a challenge for myself.
I Challenged Myself: To read diversely, to try to read more of my physical books and to give away more books once I was done with them.
A New Genre I Attempted: I read We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie which is a Ted Talk as a book. I liked it a lot.
An Author New-to-me in 2024 I Really Enjoyed: Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé
My Favorite Book of the Year: I can never pick one...
+ The Past Is Red by Catherynne M. Valente
+ Roaming by Jillian Tamaki & Mariko Tamaki
+ Babel by R.F. Kuang
+ Resistance: A Graphic Novel by Val McDermid & Kathryn Briggs
+ The Firefly Summer by Morgan Matson
+ Through the Woods by Emily Carroll
+ The Road to Roswell by Connie Willis
+ The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
+ Where Sleeping Girls Lie by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé
Books I Read in 2024 That I Recommend: All of the ones in the previous question and add The Radium Girls which wasn't necessarily a favourite in that it didn't leave me feeling happy about things but it was an important read and was one of my highest rated books of the year.

In 2025:

My Reading Goal: To read 100 books and to be kind to myself if I don't make it.
I'm Going to Challenge Myself:
+ Continue reading more diverse books.
+ Read more physical books as I keep getting more than I’m reading. Focus on books received as gifts
+ Give more books away – to little free libraries etc. just free up the space if I’m not likely to re-read This year really prioritize this as I have an excess of books.
+ Try to buy mainly from local independent bookstores.
My TBR List: I don't have a realistic TBR. I add everything I have a shred of interest in to Goodreads.
Books I'm Especially Interested in Reading in 2025: Adrift in Currents Clean and Clear
by Seanan McGuire, My Favorite Thing is Monsters book two by Emil Ferris, the third Book of Dust by Philip Pullman if it's out this year, A Witch's Guide to Magical Innkeeping by Sangu Mandanna
A Book Coming Out in 2025 That I'm Excited About: All of the above except for the Emil Ferris one which is already out.
Other Book-Related News for 2025 I'm Interested In: I often am surprised by book news as I'm not following things that closely - so I'm pleased to say that finding out that Murderbot is getting a show makes my list of things I might be interested in.

I Read: 30 books in 2024.
My Reading Goal: I didn't set any goals, but I feel that I should have read more.
A New Genre I Attempted: I read a number of classical children's books that I have never read before, like Boxcar Children and My Father's Dragon. I enjoyed them.
An Author New-to-me in 2024 I Really Enjoyed: Lord Dursany. It's interesting to see how his books are different from the later fantasy genre.
My Favorite Book of the Year: Rental Person Who Does Nothing. A fun and insightful memoir about social expectation of oneself and relationship
Books I Read in 2024 That I Recommend: Write Your Novel from the Middle. I really like the writing advice.

In 2025:

My Reading Goal: I don't have a set goal. My life has been very busy since December.
My TBR List: There are ~1500 books in my list. I don't know when I'll finish them.
Books I'm Especially Interested in Reading in 2025: The Holmes on Range series sounds interesting.
A Book Coming Out in 2025 That I'm Excited About: I try not to notice any news. I have too many books to read. L

In 2024:

I Read: 21 books, plus have two more in-progress
My Reading Goal: My goal was 20 books, which felt doable at the start, but by midway through the year felt impossible. By August I was barely over a quarter of the way there! I rallied in the last few months and managed to make it!
I Challenged Myself: No particular reading challenges.
A New Genre I Attempted: I didn't really try any new genres, but I did start reading more ebooks, which helped with how many books I made it through. (Using ebooks as my time-waster on my phone helped me spend a lot more time reading.)
An Author New-to-me in 2024 I Really Enjoyed: I read The Name of the Wind, so discovered why so many people really like Patrick Rothfuss.
My Favorite Book of the Year: Absolution by Jeff VanderMeer.
Books I Read in 2024 That I Recommend: The entire Southern Reach now-quartet by Jeff VanderMeer (the trilogy were already faves, but the fourth book was also great). The October Daye series by Seanan McGuire (read the most recent two this year.) Witch King by Martha Wells. The Murderbot Diaries by Martha wells (read the most recent one this year.) The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Space for More by Emily Antoinette, a cute sci-fi poly alien romance.

In 2025:

My Reading Goal: I'm aiming for 25 books this year, which I'm hoping will feel a lot easier now that I'm trying reading one physical book and one ebook at a time. I'll be thrilled if I get through more.
I'm Going to Challenge Myself: Nothing in particular! I have enough I want to read.
My TBR List: I do have one, with probably 40+ books on it. I doubt I'll get through them all, but hope to make a dent. A bunch are sequels, so I may end up rereading a bunch of stuff in preparation for the ones on my list.
Books I'm Especially Interested in Reading in 2025: The Luminous Dead has been on my list for a couple years now. I'm excited for Beyond the Sea, and am rereading The House in the Cerulean Sea in preparation for it. Also excited for new installments of series that I like, like October Daye and Incryptid.
A Book Coming Out in 2025 That I'm Excited About: I don't think I've actually paid a lot of attention to upcoming releases, beyond hopefully those new installments in ongoing series.
Other Book-Related News for 2025 I'm Interested In: Nothing comes to mind. (I guess again, with the ongoing series, that author has gone to a new publisher, so I'm excited to see if that brings more about, too.)

I Read: 22 books!
My Reading Goal: At least as many as I did in 2023, and to read at least some of the book club books I have with a few otjer people. I read nine books in 2023, so I think we can call 22 in 2024 a resounding success.
I Challenged Myself: To find more time to read, which had the additional perk of actually quite helpful in becoming more mindful of how I use my time. I chose to grab a book instead of browse the internet (which I do aimlessly, anyway) and it was greatly to my benefit.
A New Genre I Attempted: I tend to read literary fiction and non-fiction, so I decided to try light novels, beginning with The Mimosa Confessions. I really enjoyed the first volume, and it was nice to finish a book in four hours. Would definitely recommend it if it sounds up your alley. My brother (who usually reads graphic novels exclusively) also really liked it.
An Author New-to-me in 2024 I Really Enjoyed: Mei Hachimoku (author of The Mimosa Confessions). I plan to collect them as they come out!
My Favorite Book of the Year: Woodcutters by Thomas Bernhard
Books I Read in 2024 That I Recommend: Besides the two already mentioned, Dream Work by Mary Oliver, When Nietzsche Wept by Irvin D. Yalom and Bambi by Felix Salten were excellent. And James Norbury's The Dog Who Followed the Moon, which looks like a children's book but is actually a philosophy book intended for adults. :)

In 2025:

My Reading Goal: My goal in 2025 is to read the books we're being assigned in book club, but otherwise, a total of 10 will be nice. I'm graduating with my Master's in December, so I'm anticipating that it will be busy. I think 10 is reasonable with that in mind.
I'm Going to Challenge Myself: No specific challenges, but I want to read outside of my usual (books taking place in German-speaking countries).
My TBR List: I want to read Edogawa Rampo, Italo Calvino, Gabriel García Márquez, and Min Jin Lee's Pachinko. ...And the book club books, of course, starting with Duras's The Lover.
Books I'm Especially Interested in Reading in 2025: Heimito von Doderer's The Strudlhof Steps, Fyodor Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov.
A Book Coming Out in 2025 That I'm Excited About: I don't really keep up with new releases, but The Mimosa Confessions vol. 3 is coming out in February and I'll definitely be getting it for my personal library.
Other Book-Related News for 2025 I'm Interested In: See above :'D

I Read: 88 books.
My Reading Goal: My goal was 50 books - I always set a low-ish one as to not stress out about it - and I reached it some time in June, I think. I am satisfied with having reached and surpassed it, but I still want to get back into reading even more.
I Challenged Myself: I only did the Goodreads challenge (as said above, my goal was 50).
A New Genre I Attempted: Hmmm I don't think so. I read almost any genre as it is, so there's not much to expand on, lol. I might have read a little more Fantasy/Dystopia this year.
An Author New-to-me in 2024 I Really Enjoyed: Charlotte McConaghy! ♥
My Favorite Book of the Year: It is a tie between "Migrations" by above-mentioned author & "We'll Prescribe You A Cat" by Syou Ishida.
Books I Read in 2024 That I Recommend: The ones mentioned in my previous answer, and also "Once There Were Wolves" by Charlotte McConaghy & "To The Bright Edge Of The World" by Eowyn Ivey.

In 2025:

My Reading Goal: I have set my goal at 50 books again and am excited to see how many I do achieve to read.
I'm Going to Challenge Myself: Just the Goodreads one again.
My TBR List: I have a general TBR which currently has 1453 books on it xD and there are some I have my eyes on for 2025, either because I have been meaning to get to them for a long time or because they're coming out this year.
Books I'm Especially Interested in Reading in 2025: Many!

I Read: 19 books!
My Reading Goal: I set my goal at about... 17 I believe? And then upped it to 19 once I met that goal. I'm feeling good.
I Challenged Myself: Not really.
A New Genre I Attempted: I did read a non-fiction book on intuitive eating. I'm not sure how I felt about it. Some advice was useful
An Author New-to-me in 2024 I Really Enjoyed: A few new people, but particularly Lynn Flewelling.
My Favorite Book of the Year: It's hard to choose, but I think Abhorson was a top one for the end of the final battle.
Books I Read in 2024 That I Recommend: The Abhorsen series and The Bone Doll's Twin for sure. The first is a solid piece of YA fantasy with an intriguing world and an interesting magic system. The Bone Doll's Twin might be one of the most intriguing starts to a fantasy series I've ever read.

In 2025:

My Reading Goal: I'm going to try for for 20 books this more and will up the goal if I get there early. I'm excited because I think this will be a good year.
I'm Going to Challenge Myself: right now I'm doing a Daily War and Peace thing. I'm interested to see how this famous book holds up.
My TBR List: What's currently on my bookshelf and then I'm going through my to read list on storygraph to see what I can get from my library.
Books I'm Especially Interested in Reading in 2025: I'm hoping to get my hands on Holly Black's The Cruel Prince, because I saw a video and it looks like it'll be good fun. Also hoping to get Sher Lee's Legend of the White Snake.
A Book Coming Out in 2025 That I'm Excited About: Kellan Grave's Vessel of Woven Night. The last book ended on a terrible cliff hanger.
Other Book-Related News for 2025 I'm Interested In: Can't think of anything! Just excited to read!

I Read: 27 books to completion

My Reading Goal: was to post at least 12 updates to my Dreamwidth journal about my reading, which I did exactly! I skipped December and condensed April and May into one post, but I also made two standalone book review posts. I’m happy with this; the point of this goal was to make reflecting on my reading a regular part of my DW life and to keep my journal active, and I did that.

An Author New-to-me in 2024 I Really Enjoyed: was Allen Bratton, whose debut novel Henry Henry absolutely tore through me. I loved it, and I’m looking forward to seeing what Bratton’s career contains in the future!

My Favorite Book of the Year/Books I Read in 2024 That I Recommend:
Favorites are difficult! I loved Where Angels Fear to Tread and Howards End by Forster, and Henry Henry as mentioned above. This was also a great year in emotionally devastating queer manga, with The Poe Clan, Claudine, and Run Away With Me, Girl. I’m not big on choosing single favorites, and any of those really could be it, so instead I’d call them a group of titles that are easy to recommend. They’re so obviously great that if the premise and format of any sounds interesting to you, it’s probably worth reading.

I would also recommend A Separate Peace to fans of the homoerotic boarding school novel genre, which stands out among the boarding school novels that I read this year. I also enjoyed two fantasy books that I read this year, very different in tone: The Idylls of the Queen (Arthurian mystery) and The Great When (sardonic riff on the British portal fantasy).

In 2025:

My Reading Goal: is to again post at least 12 Dreamwidth entries about my reading

My TBR List: includes a bunch of books that I purchased in the second half of 2024:
The Farewell Symphony, Edmund White
Nocturnes for the King of Naples, Edmund White
Love, Leda, Mark Hyatt
The Temple, Stephen Spender
Lost Property, Ben Sonnenberg
The Woman in White, Wilkie Collins (spring 25 reading group book)
Star Clock Liddell, Yoshimi Uchida (on preorder)

I’d like to also read these unreads sitting on my bookshelf:
Orlando, Virginia Woolf
The Secret History, Donna Tartt

I am currently reading The Book of Life by C. H. B. Kitchin, which will be my first novel of the year.

My Reading Goal: do you have a goal, and how do you feel about it? I set a goal on Goodreads of 20 books. I think it's an achievable goal that won't stress me out.
I'm Going to Challenge Myself: do you plan on doing any reading challenges? Maybe the r/fantasy bingo when it starts again in April.
My TBR List: do you have one for 2025? how long is it? any plans? I have a huge backlog of unread e-books. I shouldn't buy any more but I most certainly will.
Books I'm Especially Interested in Reading in 2025: The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon. Historical fiction set in 18th century Maine.
A Book Coming Out in 2025 That I'm Excited About: Hammajang Luck by Makana Yamamoto looks like it will be fun.

I Read: 61 books...... I didn't think I'd get so far.
My Reading Goal: Read more books more regularly and analyze/learn from them. :D I got both done!
I Challenged Myself: Going to cheat, I didn't focus on any challenges, but I did try to focus solely on reading what I liked without worrying what other people thought and that was definitely a challenge.
A New Genre I Attempted: Dragonology and mythology. I'd love to read more!
An Author New-to-me in 2024 I Really Enjoyed: I'll cheat again and say two: Grant Morrison and Nigel Kitching
My Favorite Book of the Year: Anything from the 2009 Batman and Robin series ORRR maybe Sonic The Comic. 2024 was a good year on the comics side for me.
Books I Read in 2024 That I Recommend: It depends. Shin Getter Robo is good super robot fiction. If you want cape then Batman and Robin (2009) will definitely scratch that itch! Or if you want really tight pacing, surrealism, science fantasy then might I suggest Sonic The Comic?

In 2025:

My Reading Goal: Keep reading what I like and reflecting on it. Keep up these reading habits and see if I can make them even better.
I'm Going to Challenge Myself: Idk.
My TBR List: Those manifest organically over the coming days, it'll happen when it happens.
Books I'm Especially Interested in Reading in 2025: More Batman, more super robot fiction, more Sonic The Comic.

I Read: how many books in 2024? 38
My Reading Goal: did you have a goal, and how do you feel about it? 20, a little less than 2 books a month
I Challenged Myself: did you do any reading challenges? how did you do? did you like it? I was nervous about setting a bigger challenge with my time constraints, but I really found myself loving reading again in '21 -- I actually enjoy it these days even more than writing -- and wanted to be sure I continued to explore my renewed passion for reading. I wanted to set the goal for 2 books a month, but cut back by four in case life got crazy as it so often does. I was very pleased with my success. :)
A New Genre I Attempted: did you try a new genre, and if so, how did you feel about it? I have read some mysteries before, but I've never really been a Dean Koontz fan. One of the books I was recommended last year was Koontz's The Husband, which very much grabbed and held my attention. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for more Koontz in the future, but the plotline will have to be something that intrigues me.
An Author New-to-me in 2024 I Really Enjoyed: Another author I really enjoyed was the person chosen to write the Spike prequel, William Ritter. Sadly, he doesn't have any more Buffy books yet.
My Favorite Book of the Year: This is REALLY HARD this year -- there were SO MANY GOOD! ones -- but with the next question, it does make it doable. :) I'd have to go with the Spike prequel again, Bloody Fool For Love.
Books I Read in 2024 That I Recommend: Bloody Fool For Love :) The first of Disney's Queen's Council series, Rebel Rose (Belle's book) and Nothing Special, which is another new author I'd read some from before in the past and enjoyed but didn't really pay attention to her name but will DEFINITELY be doing so going forward, Katie Cook, would be my second and third choices of the year. Andre Norton's Here Abide Monsters is definitely worth a visit as well; it's like a time capsule back to the '70s in small book form!

In 2025:

My Reading Goal: do you have a goal, and how do you feel about it? I'm going full on for the 2 a month this year, so 24 :)
I'm Going to Challenge Myself: do you plan on doing any reading challenges? See above
My TBR List: do you have one for 2025? how long is it? any plans? I constantly have a TBR on GoodReads and am always adding to it, mostly so I don't forget about the books I come across that look interesting. However, I've got several that have been waiting for me for some time now that I really want to get into, including a Shania Twain autobiography, and I SO want to get into more of the Disney's Queen's Council series! I've also had a revelation recently that I am NOT alone, and there is a name for what my mother did to me AND a FEW books on the market that address the issue by other survivors. I've always loved comics, and am enjoying the most recent edition of Uncanny X-Men, but I'm finding myself moving further and further away from comics. I also got the quite haul of Christian books recently and have been on a decidedly motivational kick now for some months... And I'm actually reading the Bible, enjoying it, and truly understanding it for the first time in my life. I've also just finished a book on the First Ladies, and am definitely interested in picking up more biographies on several of them to whom I've never really paid much attention prior and more from the author herself. AND with some recent interviews I've seen with Billy Idol, I'm thinking about giving his biography a go again. I've also recently been considering rereading Adam Ant's autobiography, which pulled me through a very rough patch in my life.
Yeah, I'm totally getting to where it's more about the reading than the writing these days... Which is NOT a bad thing!! <3
Books I'm Especially Interested in Reading in 2025: See above.

I Read: Storygraph says 67 books
My Reading Goal: My goal was to simply read more books and less fic and lo and behold, that happened!
I Challenged Myself:I did kingstoken's book bingo again, and this time I managed to finish it. And then I did the bingo again but as a danmei version.
A New Genre I Attempted: Not new especially but I've never really been into comics and now I read a couple. Still not my fave.
An Author New-to-me in 2024 I Really Enjoyed: Tamsyn Muir!
My Favorite Book of the Year: Only one? Lol. Okay. Hm. Tamsyn Muir's Gideon the Ninth, Lisa Henry and Sarah Honey's Adventures in Aguillon trilogy, Witch King by Martha Wells, SVSSS by MXTX, priest's Mo Du...
Books I Read in 2024 That I Recommend: I could recommend several but now that everything seems to be terrible and horrible and not good, I urge people to get their hands on Becky Chambers' A Plsam for the Wild-Built. That's hope punk at its best.

In 2025:

My Reading Goal: I set the goal to 60 books.
I'm Going to Challenge Myself: I'm doing kingstoken's challenge again, but this time I'm combining it with the Duck Prints Press' queer reading challenge and two buzzword challenges (cover picture and title). The bingo is the only on I'm actually trying to fill, the rest is just for fun. The main challenge, I think, is to read from the books I already have and not buy new books at a whim. So far it's going great because instead of buying, I'm downloading stuff from Project Gutenberg. 🤦🏻‍♀️
My TBR List: Lol my TBR list is Long and keeps getting longer.
Books I'm Especially Interested in Reading in 2025: I already read Xiran Jay Zhao's Heavenly Tyrant. 😁 But there's a pile of danmei waiting for me...

My Reading Goal: did you have a goal, and how do you feel about it? End goal was 100, but I always start at 25 & if I pass that, go up by 25... So I did do past 75 but kinda gave up throughout the year at various times (mainly because I couldn't focus enough to read? Or just wasn't feeling it).
I Challenged Myself: did you do any reading challenges? how did you do? did you like it? I did join a bookclub for the first time and I absolutely loved it (minus the books that got picked, they ended up being fairly terrible) but it was nice doing something with people again. Sadly the bookclub broke up so I'm not part of any anymore.
A New Genre I Attempted: did you try a new genre, and if so, how did you feel about it? I'm usually more intro romance genre (and the various subcategories of those plus Marvel/DC graphic novels) but we did try a more Fantasy-focused genre in the bookclub (Book: The Priory of the Orange Tree) which I absolutely hated. Not for the fantasy aspects but more for the too much details that don't matter and way too many point of views - it was just too much for me. I was doing the audio version say maybe that was why but I just won't try that one again.
An Author New-to-me in 2024 I Really Enjoyed: Lana Ferguson, Elle Rivers, Natalie Cana, and Anita Kelly
My Favorite Book of the Year: Tie between 10 Things That Never Happened by Alexis Hall and Funny Story by Emily Henry
Books I Read in 2024 That I Recommend: Contractual Obligations by Elle Rivers, Love & Other Disasters by Anita Kelly, The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare, A Proposal They Can't Refuse by Natalie Cana, Text Book Romance by Kristen Bailey, and Best Laid Plans by Roan Parrish (plus all the Alexis Hall and Emily Henry books which I have also read and really enjoy)

In 2025:

My Reading Goal: do you have a goal, and how do you feel about it? I'm going to start with 25 and hope to get 100. I mostly want to tackle my in-house TBR pile & maybe do some fun reading challenges.
I'm Going to Challenge Myself: do you plan on doing any reading challenges? Not sure... there's a Book Bingo that I like the idea of (I did substitute a few prompts). See if there are any other book clubs I could maybe join.
My TBR List: do you have one for 2025? how long is it? any plans? 1051 according to Goodreads.... lol. Sooo hopefully I'll tackle the ones I actually have in my house first.
Books I'm Especially Interested in Reading in 2025: Tackling my Marvel & DC books I haven't read already would definitely be amazing. But I'd say tackling at least at least 5-10% of my TBR pile would be amazing.
A Book Coming Out in 2025 That I'm Excited About: n/a (probably any books from authors I enjoy but I haven't looked)
Other Book-Related News for 2025 I'm Interested In: n/a

In 2024:

I Read: 26 books!
My Reading Goal: I originally set my target to 30 because it was 20 last year and I managed 25, but I got eaten by a long fanfic reading spree so I ended up dropping it down to 25 again in December.
I Challenged Myself: I signed up for r/fantasy's bingo card again and completed the 2023-2024 one in March! That's usually quite enough for me haha.
A New Genre I Attempted: I attempted to add some horror to my bingo cards and enjoyed them enough that I want to try and branch out a bit more, maybe.
An Author New-to-me in 2024 I Really Enjoyed: Yoon Ha Lee!
My Favorite Book of the Year: A toss-up between Robert Jackson Bennett's Tainted Cup, Exordia by Seth Dickinson and Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee.
Books I Read in 2024 That I Recommend: The Tainted Cup!!! Also highly recommend the Oleander Sword by Tasha Suri, although that's the second book in the series.

In 2025:

My Reading Goal: I went for 25 again! Feels like a safe bet, and I'll be happy if I go past it.
I'm Going to Challenge Myself: Once again, I am finishing up the 24-25 fantasy bingo card, and I am most likely going to sign up again on the 1st of Feb!
My TBR List: Not as yet - it's usually made up of my bingo card books haha. I have 6.5 books to finish before April 1st, so those, and there's a few upcoming releases I'm excited for! Bingo card books include: finishing the Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern, Dragonsbane by Barbara Hambley, Dragon Mage by M.L. Spencer, the Wings Upon Her Back by Samantha Mills, Children of Time by Adrien Tchaikovsky, either the Necessity of Rain by Sarah Chorn or the Lighthouse Witches by C.J. Cooke, and the Silmarillion by Tolkien (although this might get switched out, I'm not sure how quickly I can read it lol).
Books I'm Especially Interested in Reading in 2025: The Lotus Empire by Tasha Suri, Raven Stratagem by Yoon Ha Lee, Kushiel's Avatar by Jacqueline Carey, other than that, unknown until I do my new bingo card!
A Book Coming Out in 2025 That I'm Excited About: The Devils by Joe Abercrombie, A Drop of Corruption by Robert Jackson Bennett and the Tomb of Dragons by Katherine Addison! Sorry I know that's three, but AHHHH!!!
Other Book-Related News for 2025 I'm Interested In: Unknown! Some more news about Joe Abercrombie's screen deals would be fucking nice, but unlikely to be this year I think.
