I read quite a few things as part of a reading challenge in a discord server I'm in. Part of the challenge is reviewing what you read in order to prove you read it, so you can get those sweet fake internet points. And I figure I can share these with you! :D

These are pretty short reviews, since the purpose was just "hey I read this book!"

Fake it 'til You Make Out (Jun 2)

Author: Isla Olsen
Book Genre: Romance
Finished Page Count: 136
Review: Heath runs into his cheat ex-girldfriend and pretends to be in a relationship with his (male) best friend. As guys do. She then outs them to everyone, and they decide to keep going along with it.

So there's a section at the end where's there's a cheating misunderstanding. Declan's ex hastesticular cancer (he's fine, it's all good, treatment worked) and is like "soon i might be stuck in hospitals and ugly, give me one last kiss while i'm still pretty" and Dec does it. Instantly. Without guilt. Heath's previous girlfriend cheated on him and broke his heart, so he's understandably upset that Dec lied to him and kissed his ex. And the narrative is so clearly on Dec's side! Dec is like "i'm not going to instantly clear up this misunderstanding because if Heath wants to fight for us, he needs to figure that out himself" and I'm just like. F off.

The clear intent here is that Dec is hurt Heath doesn't have more faith in him and doesn't just trust Declan kissed that guy for a good reason, and he refuses to say that reason because the guy isn't out about his condition. But dude. You cheated on your boyfriend. Who got cheated on in his last serious relationship. You don't have the moral high ground here.

This just infuriates me, because of course Heath has insecurities about this, of course it's gonna drag up bad memories and thoughts. Of course it's gonna hurt. But no, boohoo Declan, Heath wants an explanation for why you cheated on him. How selfish. How cruel. And the narrative just completely invalidates Heath's hurt over this; it's just a little kiss, after all. But to me, that's crossing a clear boundary and trampling over an already existing pain, and I'm sorry, but I hate this.

Ugh.

The rest of the story was fine. Fun writing, fun characters, a sweet relationship. Low-key hated Declan by the end. A fun time until the last part.

The Disabled Tyrant's Beloved Pet Fish, Vol. 1 (Jun 5)

Author: Xue Shan Fei Hu
Book Genre: Romance
Finished Page Count: 361
Review: I thought this was fun! Li Yu unexpectedly transmigrates into a fish in an ancient palace romance starring a tyrannical emperor and a delicate male concubine and in order to regain his human form, he needs to complete the systems mission 'to change the emperor's personalty'. Luckily, it's early in the plot and the tyrant emperor is neither a tyrant nor the emperor yet; he is Prince Jing, and he's not even fighting for the throne right now. And also unluckily, Li Yu is a *fish.*

...sob sob sob, how is a fish supposed to do this? System, help! (The system doesn't help. It's a fish-scamming system, hmph.)

Anyway, I had a good time. I like both Li Yu and Prince Jing, and Wang Xi and also Ye Qinghuan. Lots of fun characters! The progression of their relationship as Prince Jing got more fond of Li Yu was very lovely, and it was really fun when he pampered his pet fish. And he does figure it out (which I don't think is a spoiler because like, he has to figure it out for the *romance* to happen, LOL)! Because Li Yu gets a skill to turn into a human an hour a day, and can't resist the draw of tasty snacks. Same, honestly.

The Amazing Alpha Tau Pledge Project (Jun 10)

Author: Sarah Honey, Lisa Henry
Book Genre: Romance
Finished Page Count: 222
Review: In book 3 of the Alpha Tau series, pledge master Casey and new pledge Briar hook up. While this wasn't as fun a read as the previous books, it was as *good* a read. Like, it just wasn't as *funny* because Briar's dealing with some heavier problems and their personalities are different than previous' couples (shout out to Marty, my forever beloved chaos gremlin!)

I really liked Briar and Casey; the progression of their relationship was sweet and the way Briar slowly came out of his shell as he found sure footing under his feet was really good to read. I was a bit slow reading this because I was worried about how the Reveal about Briar's grades and stuff would go, but it turned out fine, everyone was very supportive and Briar didn't burn all his bridges like I feared, whew.

They were sweet together, and the side-characters continue to be sweet and funny, and yeah, I had a good time!

Gloam (Jun 12)

Author: Lily Mayne
Book Genre: Romance
Finished Page Count: 310
Review: Book 4 in the Monstrous series, Rig is determined to save Gloam and sets out into the Wastes with Gloam and Mary, the evil woman holding him captive and forcing him to do her will. This is complicated by the fact that it's magic keeping Gloam trapped, and Gloam is not even able to tell Rig anything about it.

I rally enjoyed this book. It's been a while since I've poked around the Monstrous 'verse, and I forgot how much I liked it. The imagery of the abandoned cities and so on is really cool, and I really liked both Gloam and Rig. Considering Gloam can't talk for a large part of the book, Mayne manages to smack in a lot of characterization for him anyway. He's the *best*, and I adore him and Rig, and their romance was super sweet. On the whole, it was a fun read and has reignited my desire to read the other books in the series!

The Devil Will Care (Jun 13)

Author: Holly Day
Book Genre: Alien Romance
Finished Page Count: 146
Review: In an intergalactic prison, life-stealer Azrail meets the alien Khaal--who claims they're mates. Together, they work to escape the prison and get together along the way, complicated by cultural differences.

The writing style is very choppy, and it makes the characters seem kind of caustic? Like, everything is very rushed, and so are conversations and the like, and it feels kind of shallow because everything is so heavily tell and very little show. A character can seem like an asshole in one line of dialogue and then be the cutest thing in the next line, because... idk why but the writing is very to the point, I guess, and takes no time getting there, and as a result the whole thing feels... incredibly non-curious, maybe. And there's very little worldbuilding to speak of, which always makes me sad in alien romances. I want alien worldbuilding in my romance!

All that said, Khaal is adorable and he deserves better than Azrail. Azrail was kind of an asshole to Khaal the whole way through and while he had moments of non-assholery, he never really grew on me. The writing style did him no favors, and I don't get why he suddenly did an about-face at the end and decided he cared about Khaal after all. There was very little build up to this, and it felt unearned to me. I don't get why they're together aside from Khaal's biology deciding they're mates.

It feels like if this had been twice as long, it could have been 200% better. But I mostly got what I wanted out of it, which was an m/m alien romance that was quick to read, so it's not like I had a bad time or anything.

It's fine, it just... feels kind of like it needed some more editing or something.

Sphere (Jun 15)

Author: Michael Crichton
Book Genre: Suspense Scifi
Finished Page Count: 522
Review: In *Sphere*, an impossible ship is discovered at the bottom of the ocean and a crew of experts is assembled to investigate it for extraterrestrial origins.

This did not go the way I thought it would, LOL.

I absolutely loved it; the writing is just really enrapturing, and very easy to get into--I just really vibe with the style. The development of the mystery was captivating, and I *really* did not expect it to be the thing it was--there are so many spoilers I could drop here but I'm not gonna. You should read it if you're curious! It's good! 😄

I think the ending was nice, too. It was certainly more climactic than *The Andromeda Strain*. And the characters were fun, managing to be annoying at times without me growing weary and annoyed *at* them. My fav characters were Norman and Harry, and I will say nothing else for spoilers.

The exploration of the science was fascinating, and yeah, it managed to stay one step ahead of me the entire time without making me feel dumb, lol. It kept up a constant suspense for me and all the twists and turns were fun. I enjoyed it a lot and am def gonna read more by Crichton!

You're Not My King! (Jun 22)

Author: Eryn Hawk
Book Genre: Alien Romance
Finished Page Count: DNF at 50% (169 of 339 total pages)
Review: I can't do this. I'm sorry, I just can't. Reuben is such a grating characters—he's bratty and relentlessly sarcastic and complaining and he calls himself an uggo a lot but a single sentence by a stranger refuting this apparently solves all his self-image issues. He's incredibly annoying, and it's *exhausting.*

This book feels like it needs maybe 2 more rounds of editing. The dialogues are juvenile—everything that needs to be said is said and what doesn't need to be said isn't said. One of the side-characters annoy the hell out of me too—Fiona comes across as preaching from the get-go, and it never lets up. She 'tuts' and 'sasses' in conversation, and it's so incredibly nauseating. And apparently Reuben likes her and appreciates her support and I'm just over here like 'dude she's invaliding your every feeling of fear and discomfort in your technically *forced mating with an alien after you were kidnapped by other aliens who sold you to these aliens* situation, wtf is wrong with you?'

I tried so hard to keep reading because Vo'ak, the alien male lead, is really charming and cute and I like him. His POV chapters are actually bearable! They're even *enjoyable* sometimes! But it seems like 90% of the book is in Reuben's POV, and I can't stand it. At this point, every page I'm wincing and frowning and covering my eyes, trying to astral-project to the author my annoyance and 'why would you do this?' Why does the characters say these things? Reuben's dialogues with humans are unbearable, I hate it, please free me from this pain.

I'm so disappointed. This could have been *so good*. But the writing just doesn't carry it, the worldbuilding isn't interesting enough (tho I am curious about the alien trees...) and Reuben is a horrible main character. It feels unpolished and rushed and it just needed more editing.

Bromantic Puckboy (Jun 26)

Author: Eden Finley, Saxon James
Book Genre: Sports Romance
Finished Page Count: 261
Review: Book six in the Puckboys series, this time Bilson, guy with four failed marriages, moves to another city and switches hockey teams because look 4 ex-wives is a *lot* and the city ain't that big. He wants a new start. And as part of that, he's going celibate--because he tends to fall in love with everyone he sleeps with.

But. Well. Okay, look it's hard to be celibate! And Miles, the goalie on his team, is his best friend and has the best ideas. So when Miles is like 'we could hook up, it'd just be sex, we're both straight so you woulndät fall in love with me', Bilson is like, great idea! Let's do that! So they do that.

They fall in love. (And they're not straight.) Spoiler, my bad.

The romance is sweet; I thought the progression from friendship to romance was very well done. Lovable characters all around. Please stop poking fun at Dex's intelligence, it's not funny, you don't have to get digs in in every single book, character growth is a thing. Miles and Bilson were sweet together and I enjoyed their interactions. Overall, I had a good time!

The Alien Emissary (Jun 28)

Author: Eryn Ivers
Book Genre: Alien SciFi Romance
Finished Page Count: 106
Review: I thought this was pretty good. Bryant, desperate for money so he can bail his 13-year-old daughter out of jail, attempts to rob an alien emissary's ship. However, he's caught by the security system; flex metal tentacles connected via scifi telepathy to the Emissary, and thoroughly ravished. Yes, there was tentacle smut in the first chapter. I did not expect that, LOL.

They do deal with the consent issues of the ravishing, and Bryant was definitely into it. There's some back and forth between them; Bryant doesn't want to stick with the emissary because he's afraid he'll grow soft and get killed when the emissary tires of him, the emissary wants to take care of Bryant and court him and stuff. Eventually, they come to a compromise and presumably live happily ever after.

I think this book managed to stuff a lot emotions into a pretty short read, which is impressive. The alien was charming and though I'm not really sure how he differs biologically from humans (aside from strips of skin that change colors with his emotions), he was still interesting. And while Bryant wasn't particularly my favorite character, of the alien romances I've read so far, this is definitely one of the better ones. I might keep going with the series? We'll see.

The Sins of the Orc (Jun 30)

Author: Finley Fenn
Book Genre: Fantasy Romance
Finished Page Count: 180
Review: There's a new healer in Kesst's Orc Mountain, and Kesst hates him. But the more time he spends with him, the more KEsst realizes he's the one in the wrong, and he kind of actually likes Eft. Especially after Eft saves his life. Trigger warnings for ||dubcon bordering on noncon depending on how you read it (not between main pairing) and murder.||

Well. Hmm. So, a couple of things. First, the Icelandic completely killed my suspension of disbelief. I don't get why it's there. Why not just conlang? There's no clue about this in this book, so every time any Icelandic showed up I was just like... okay. But why though? And also when Kesst teaches Eft to say *eg elska dig* and claims it means 'I adore you' and it does not. It means 'I love you' and it just felt violating, and kind of mocking Eft's trust, forcing him to say something different than he meant. It felt kind of gross to me, even though later it's revealed that Eft has cottoned on.

Second, Kesst feels kind of... that kind of 'written like a woman but with man bits tacked on top so it can be called an MM romance' kind of feel. His characterization just feels kind of whimsy and shallow. There are also *oh so many* 'oh's in this book. So many. It just got distracting at some point. And so many sentences, especially in the sex scenes, end on ... or em dashes so often and that just isn't a good way to build tension for me. I did not vibe with this writing style, and the closer I got to the end, the more a drag this was to read. I'll not be proceeding any further with this serie(s).

Pet Fish was unexpectedly entertaining! I was sceptical at first, because I'm not super fond of overtly comical novels, but I felt it ended up being charming and cute rather than obnoxious. I'm looking forward for more!
