The worldbuilding and characterization work in Yiddish Policemen's Union are so excellent! I just really love Chabon.

Also, your thoughts on The Hands of the Emperor are exactly why I have been resisting various encouragements to read the book; I'm pretty sure I'd have the same feelings.
this is so encouraging to hear, thank you. I stopped reading fantasy entirely for about a decade (this was about 15 years ago) because I couldn't get over how it felt like every story has to be about nobility. Then Hands of the Emperor amplified that problem enormously.
